Kribi, a considerable historical heritage

The city of Kribi, capital of the Ocean department in the South Cameroon region. It brings together the Arrondissements of Kribi 1st and 2nd. It is a Decentralized Territorial Collectivity created by Presidential Decree No. 2008/024 of January 18, 2008 with the main mission of promoting local development, improving the framework and living conditions of the populations.

Seaside resort located at the mouth of the Kienké River, capital of the Ocean Department since October 20, 1961, and commonly considered the economic capital of the South Region, the City of Kribi is characterized by commercial and ports since its creation.

Its first contacts with Portuguese explorers date back to the 15th century, while its urbanization only really began around 1890 with the installation of German soldiers, as well as the arrival of Pallotine missionaries.

After suffering the horrors of the 1st World War, it found itself under French administration between 1916 and 1960, a period during which large agricultural crop plantations were set up.

The Municipality, for its part, was first called Mixed Commune of Kribi (1950 – 1958), then Commune de Plein Exercise (1958 – 1974); then, the Urban Commune of Kribi (1974 – 2007), which finally gave way to the Urban Community of Kribi (since 2008). Created through the adoption of Decree No. 2008/024 of January 17, 2008, it was first placed under the authority of a Government Delegate, now it is administered by a City Mayor.
